The Black Sheep Brewery Sportive – Ride, Conquer, and Celebrate in the Yorkshire Dales
Get ready for a cycling experience like no other – the Black Sheep Brewery Sportive takes you on an unforgettable journey through the Yorkshire Dales, combining epic roads, stunning scenery, and the perfect post-ride pint at one of the UK’s most iconic breweries.
The Ride – Challenge Yourself in Cycling Paradise
Starting and finishing at the Black Sheep Brewery in the charming market town of Masham, this sportive winds its way through the rolling hills and quiet country lanes of Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. With a choice of routes to suit different abilities, every rider will get a taste of Yorkshire’s legendary cycling terrain.
The highlight of the ride? Trapping Hill. This brutal ascent from Lofthouse is one of the toughest climbs in the Dales, stretching for 1.5 miles (2.4km) with an average gradient of 9%, but kicking up to a punishing 20%+ in places. It’s a true test of grit, determination, and climbing legs—but the reward is an exhilarating descent and breathtaking views across the Dales.
The Brewery – A Perfect Yorkshire Welcome
After conquering the ride, there’s no better place to celebrate than at Black Sheep Brewery. Founded in 1992 by Paul Theakston, the brewery has become a household name for its bold, flavourful ales, crafted using traditional Yorkshire methods and the pure Dales water that flows through the region.
Black Sheep’s award-winning beers, including the iconic Best Bitter, bold Black Sheep IPA, and refreshing Golden Sheep, are brewed with a commitment to quality, using whole-flower hops and Yorkshire square fermenters for that signature smoothness and depth of flavour.
The Reward – Beer, Banter, and a Proper Yorkshire Finish
Cross the finish line and enjoy a well-earned pint of Black Sheep’s finest, included with your entry. Relax in the brewery’s beer garden, soak in the atmosphere, and share your ride stories with fellow cyclists. With great food and the warm Yorkshire hospitality, this sportive is more than just a ride—it’s a celebration of everything that makes cycling in the Dales so special.
